Fletcher Augustus DeRouen
A diary for our son, by Joe and Andrea DeRouen

Fletcher is now 17 months old. He loves to play with all sorts of things. He adores the Mighty Mo (Japanese versions) trucks and cars that Joe gave to him. These are similar to toys Joe had as a child and he has found some sturdy vintage ones from Japan that are so cute but are really tough. They have friction wheels so when a child pushes them forward, they continue to roll for some time. Fletcher zooms them around the living room and on the patio. He is still thrilled with Mardi Gras beads and was given some new ones at Red Lobster that he wears about the house.
He now will find a book that we quote. Joe quoted a line from one of his books the other day and Fletcher ran, found it, and brought it back to be read. He loves Dragon Tales, Blue's Clues, and The Wiggles. He will dance to almost any music and always seems to be on the beat.
We finally found a meat he will eat, chicken fries. These are white-meat chicken shaped like long, skinny fingers and he will carry one in each hand and nibble on them. If only they made broccoli fries.

Fletcher is fascinated by balloons, I would even call it an obsession. Every time he sees one he points and complains that it's not in his hand. We buy him helium balloons and he holds onto the strings for hours. He has even fallen asleep holding onto the balloon string.
He really understands so many things now. When he sees Sesame Street, he runs to get his Elmo doll. When he sees Roly Poly Olie on TV, he gathers up the Roly Poly Olie books and brings them to us to read. It's fascinating to watch his mind develop. If he would just talk to us more than the occasional word, I think he would be less frustrated. I'm sure being a chatterbox is just around the corner.
